Park Slope and Williamsburg get most of the attention, but buyers who want more space, park access and value have plenty of other Brooklyn neighborhoods to consider. Here are eight worth a look, with the parks, housing, transit and school district for each.
Public school zoning is set by address and changes from year to year. Confirm any specific address with the NYC Department of Education’s Find a School tool.

Parks, Space and Commute
Marine Park
Marine Park is named for one of Brooklyn’s largest parks. It has baseball fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, a golf course and the Salt Marsh Nature Center. Most of the housing is detached and semi-detached houses, many with driveways. There’s no subway stop inside the neighborhood, so buyers who drive or work from home tend to look here.
Greenwood Heights
Greenwood Heights sits between Park Slope and Sunset Park. It’s served by the R train, with the D and N at 36th Street. Next door is Green-Wood Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark open to visitors, with 478 acres of paths and hills. The housing is a mix of classic row houses and newer condominiums and townhouses.
Prospect Lefferts Gardens
Just east of Prospect Park, Prospect Lefferts Gardens is known for its limestone and brick row houses, many inside the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Historic District. It has community gardens and a weekend farmers market. The B, Q, 2 and 5 trains reach Manhattan.
Walkable Park Access
- Fort Greene: wide sidewalks and shaded paths around Fort Greene Park
- Windsor Terrace: low-traffic side streets a short walk from Prospect Park
- Bay Ridge: the Shore Road waterfront path, with views of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
Pre-K and Early Education
NYC offers free 3-K and Pre-K programs citywide. Apply through MySchools, and check the application deadlines early. Private and home-based programs vary by neighborhood, so tour any you’re considering.
How Housing Differs Across These Neighborhoods
The same budget buys very different homes depending on where you look:
- Windsor Terrace: co-ops and row houses close to Prospect Park
- Bay Ridge: detached houses with driveways, garages and back yards
- Prospect Lefferts Gardens: historic row houses, often with a rental unit and garden access
