About Brooklyn Heights
Brooklyn Heights sits on a bluff above the East River, across from Lower Manhattan, between the Brooklyn Bridge and Atlantic Avenue, west of Court Street and Cadman Plaza.
In 1965 it became New York City’s first designated historic district; the Brooklyn Heights Historic District now covers almost the whole neighborhood. Its tree-lined streets have some of the city’s oldest row houses, in Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and other 19th-century styles, along with pre-war apartment buildings and former hotels converted to co-ops.
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade, opened in the early 1950s over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, looks out over the harbor to Lower Manhattan. Montague Street is the main shopping street, and Brooklyn Borough Hall and the courts are on the eastern edge.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, the Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District and the Fulton Ferry Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
