About Lenox Hill

Lenox Hill, as covered here, is the Upper East Side from 59th Street up to 77th Street, east of Park Avenue to the East River. Roosevelt Island is excluded.

Park Avenue and the blocks just east of it are lined with pre-war co-ops, many of them inside the Upper East Side Historic District, designated in 1981. The side streets between Lexington and Third Avenues have rows of townhouses, including the Treadwell Farm Historic District on East 61st and 62nd Streets.

East of Third Avenue the neighborhood is mostly post-war: about half of its homes are in buildings from 1940 to 1979. York Avenue is lined with medical and research campuses, including Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medicine and the Hospital for Special Surgery, and Hunter College is at Lexington Avenue and 68th Street.

Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Upper East Side Historic District, the Treadwell Farm Historic District and the Upper East Side Historic District Extension. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
