About Yorkville
Yorkville, as covered here, runs from 79th Street to 96th Street, east of Third Avenue to the East River.
Its side streets are lined with walk-up apartment buildings, which still hold more than a quarter of its homes. The avenues, especially First, Second and York, have many post-war high-rises, and East End Avenue, along the river, is lined with pre-war co-ops. Henderson Place, a group of 1881 Queen Anne row houses at East End Avenue and 86th Street, is a small historic district.
Carl Schurz Park, on the river from 84th to 90th Streets, surrounds Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor, built in 1799. The Second Avenue Subway, opened in 2017, put new stations at 86th and 96th Streets.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Henderson Place Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
