About Tribeca
Tribeca, as covered here, runs from Canal Street south toward Chambers Street and City Hall, from the Hudson River east to Broadway, and includes the Civic Center around City Hall Park. The name comes from the “Triangle Below Canal Street”.
Much of the neighborhood was built in the 19th century for the wholesale food and dry-goods trades, with warehouses and store-and-loft buildings in cast iron, brick and stone. Most have since been converted to apartments with large, open floor plans. Four historic districts, Tribeca West, East, North and South, designated in 1991 and 1992, cover a large share of the neighborhood.
Since 2000, new condominium buildings have joined the converted lofts; about a quarter of Tribeca’s homes are in buildings from 2000 or later, including towers such as 56 Leonard Street. Washington Market Park and the Hudson River Park piers give the west side its open space.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Tribeca West Historic District, the Tribeca East Historic District, the Tribeca South Historic District, the Tribeca North Historic District and the Tribeca South Historic District Extension. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
