About East Village
The East Village, as covered here, runs from 14th Street down to Houston Street, east of the Bowery and Third Avenue to the East River. It includes the lettered avenues of Alphabet City.
Most of the neighborhood was built up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with five- and six-story walk-up tenement buildings, which still make up close to half of its homes. St. Marks Place and the blocks around Astor Place mark its western edge, and First and Second Avenues and Avenue A are the main commercial streets.
Tompkins Square Park, which dates from the 1830s, sits at the centre of the neighborhood. Community gardens, many of them on lots that were cleared in the 1970s and 1980s, are spread through Alphabet City. Along the river, East River Park has been rebuilt in phases under the city’s East Side Coastal Resiliency project.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the East Village / Lower East Side Historic District, the St. Mark’s Historic District and the East 10th Street Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
