About Carnegie Hill
Carnegie Hill, as covered here, runs from 86th Street to 96th Street, between Fifth Avenue and Third Avenue. It is named for Andrew Carnegie, whose 1902 mansion at Fifth Avenue and 91st Street is now the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
Fifth Avenue faces Central Park and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir and is part of Museum Mile; the Guggenheim Museum is at 88th Street. Fifth, Madison and Park Avenues are lined with pre-war apartment buildings, and the side streets have rows of brownstones and limestone townhouses.
The Carnegie Hill Historic District, designated in 1974 and expanded in 1993, covers about half of the neighborhood’s tax lots. Madison and Lexington Avenues have most of the shops.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Expanded Carnegie Hill Historic District, the Carnegie Hill Historic District and the Park Avenue Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
