About Tudor City
Tudor City is a planned apartment complex on a bluff above First Avenue, between 40th and 43rd Streets, east of Second Avenue. It was built by the Fred F. French Company in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and its brick buildings carry Tudor Revival details: stained glass, stone trim and half-timbered rooftops.
The complex was designated the Tudor City Historic District in 1988. Its buildings face inward toward two small private parks, which are open to the public, and Tudor City Place runs above 42nd Street on a bridge. The United Nations headquarters is directly across First Avenue.
Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Tudor City Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
