About NoMad

NoMad, short for “North of Madison Square Park”, is covered here as the blocks from 25th Street to 30th Street, east of Sixth Avenue toward Park Avenue South.

In the late 19th century this was a district of hotels, theaters and offices along Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Many of those buildings survive inside the Madison Square North Historic District, designated in 2001, among them Gilsey House on Broadway at 29th Street, a former hotel from 1869 that is now a co-op.

NoMad has changed quickly. About half of its homes are in buildings completed since 2000, mostly condominiums in new towers and converted office buildings. Madison Square Park, at the neighborhood’s southern edge, has a long-running public art program and a playground.

Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Madison Square North Historic District. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
