About Murray Hill

Murray Hill, as covered here, runs from 34th Street north toward 42nd Street, from about Madison Avenue to the East River, excluding Tudor City.

The western blocks, between Madison and Lexington Avenues in the mid-30s, keep many 19th-century brownstones and carriage houses; the Murray Hill Historic District covers a group of them. Sniffen Court, a mews of converted stables on East 36th Street, and the Morgan Library & Museum on Madison Avenue are both nearby.

East of Third Avenue the neighborhood is mostly post-war and newer high-rise buildings. About a third of its homes are in buildings from 1940 to 1979, and many more are in buildings from the 1980s or later.

Landmarks Preservation Commission historic districts in the neighborhood include the Murray Hill Historic District and the Murray Hill Historic District Extension. Exterior changes to buildings inside a historic district need Commission approval, which is worth knowing before buying a townhouse or planning a renovation.
